Here is a fantastic tip that I was reading about in the Brazen Careerist....
How do recruitment companies headhunt? The easy answer is that they very often look at the references listed and the credibility of the associated company. So let me ask you a question - who are the people that have listed you as a reference? If it is only people you have hired in the past you really are doing yourself a disservice.
Get the right people to use you as a reference!! You need people of your job level and above.
It is very rare that Headhunters fill entry-level positions, they fill middle management and senior management positions. If you learn how headhunters find candidates to fill positions you are in a much better position to get headhunted yourself.
So try getting your friends at your level to list you as a reference, and be sure to know how they will answer questions if asked by a headhunting agency. I would suggest that you take the time to interview your referees and never throw them on a resume as an after thought.
