What's in a Name?

With a background in marketing, Chris got his start marketing produce through the major distribution chanels around Australia. He then progressed through various sales roles, management positions and various Entrepreneurial enterprizes that saw him dealing with company CEOs and Marketing managers. Is your name important to you? What about someone else's name? Every one places a lot of importance on their own name and identity!!! This is one of the smallest things you can do to leave a fantastic impression with someone… especially in business or the workplace.
I was in a work situation where I had to introduce one of my fellow staff. The problem was that she was new and I had made no effort to remember her name. Now you may think that I just drew a blank….no I did better than that, I introduced her by the wrong name and she had to correct me. I have never been more apologetic in my life. I took her to lunch, and said sorry about 1000 times. It would have been so much easier just to remember her name!!!
Have you ever forgotten someone’s name? I know I have and it can be embarrassing. Or worse still, when you have gone to introduce someone and drawn a complete blank…..how did it make you feel and more importantly how did it make the other person feel.
Now jump to the situation where you have made a small amount of effort to remember someone’s name on your second meeting… how did you feel, and how did they feel? Most of my associates tell me that they will now go out of their way to avoid the situation and they will remember your name.
In an ideal world you would remember everybody’s name, however let’s be practical for a second, that isn’t going to happen – right?
I know that some of you may well prove me wrong. I can still remember one of my university lecturers addressing each of her class by name with no reference to notes of any description on the 2nd class of the semester. That was 35 names….no mistakes. Over coffee we were all wondering how she did it. No mistakes about it, she took the time to put in a little extra effort.
Ever wanted to leave a good impression in your job? Try a few simply techniques for remembering names. Think of someone you know with the same name; take a business card; write it down; get an organizer or if you are a little higher up a good PA.
This small skill is expremely importany for all jobs In Australia because even if the person that you meet isnt very memorable, perhaps some of their contacts may be.
